Best Answer: A serial number on a birth certificate is completely meaningless. The DVLA ought to know that so goodness knows why they ask. A birth certificate (and a marriage certificate or death certificate) is merely an official copy of the entry in the register, and you can have as many of those as you like. I've actually got two - I was born at 5 am and the registrar came round the maternity hospital during the morning, so Mum registered me on the day I was born (she and Dad must have already decided on a name) but didn't have enough money in her purse to pay for a full one.

So I got a short one. I have a full one now, which I got from the local register office when I was 21 because I was just interested to see what it said. The first number you mention is the serial number of the certificate form it's written on, so you can quote that. The second number you mention is the number of the entry in the register book, and of course there will be many register books used by registrars in different districts so that's not a unique number.
